Direct vs Third-Party Network Integrations: What's the Difference in Local Marketing?

Local search Local marketing Local SEO

When comparing local marketing platforms, you’ll often see big claims about the number of integrations. Hundreds. Sometimes thousands. On the surface, that sounds like more visibility and more reach. Nonetheless, not all network integrations work the same way, and it’s worth understanding the difference before you decide what matters most for your brand.

This article breaks down what “integration” really means in local search, why both direct and third-party networks have a role to play, and how to spot the value behind the numbers.

What is a Network Integration, Really?

In local SEO, an “integration” refers to a connection between your business data like name, hours, phone number, and a third-party platform/ network that displays that information to customers.

There are two types of integrations you’ll typically see:

Direct (API) integrations

Your platform sends data straight to the end platform via an API (e.g. Google, Apple Maps, or Facebook). These are fast, reliable, and often come with performance insights. You can control your listings more precisely.

Third-party network integrations

These involve a trusted third party like a data aggregator that passes your business data on to other platforms. You may not be able to control every detail or get direct analytics, but these third-party listing integrations extend your reach to platforms that don’t offer APIs or structured listings.

Why the Distinction Matters

Some platforms highlight how many network integrations they offer as a headline stat but don’t always explain the type or quality of those. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Direct integrations give you more control. You can make updates quickly, access insights, and know exactly what’s being published.

  • Third-party network integrations help you reach additional platforms. They’re especially useful for networks that don’t allow direct business updates, like many GPS systems or some directories.

  • Not every listing is created equal. Just because your brand is “present” on a platform doesn’t mean you can manage or track it directly.

How it Works in Practice

Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect, and Bing

These platforms not support structured, direct updates via API including fast publishing, verified listings, and actionable insights, but also provide data to a wide range of third-part networks and apps.

Google Maps and the Places API extend your data into hundreds of services including Waze, Airbnb, TripAdvisor, Instacart, Zocdoc, and smart assistants like Alexa and Siri.

Apple Business Connect's location data powers apps via Apple Maps, CarPlay, and Location Services — reaching popular platforms like Uber, Lyft, Citymapper, Booking.com, DoorDash, OpenTable, and more.

Bing Places' data powers services like Amazon Alexa, Yahoo Search, DuckDuckGo, and navigation apps such as Sygic and HERE WeGo. Your data also appears anywhere Bing Maps is embedded in third-party apps and business websites.

Waze and many GPS systems

These often rely on indirect updates via aggregators like HERE or Foursquare. Your listing appears on the platform, but updates go through a chain, and you won’t have direct control or reporting.

TikTok

Some providers now offer location data syncing that helps ensure business names and addresses appear in TikTok’s internal location database, for example, when users tag places in videos. This improves visibility, but it’s not a managed listing. You can’t log in and update your info, nor access insights.

Snapchat

Similar to TikTok, your business might be visible through Snap Map or in ad metadata, but Snapchat doesn’t currently offer business profiles or structured data management.

How Local Marketing Platforms Support Your Visibility

At the same time, we also support a vast network of 100+ third-party network integrations through reliable aggregators to help you extend your reach to platforms that don’t offer direct connections, like certain directories, apps, or navigation systems.

To Sum Up

A high number of integrations can look impressive—but in local search, it’s the type and quality of those integrations that make the difference. Direct API integrations offer more control, faster updates, and performance tracking. Third-party network integrations extend your reach to platforms that don’t offer direct access but still influence how and where customers find you. Understanding both helps you choose a platform that truly supports your local visibility goals.
