Google moves full-web search behind a partner-only API

Google has documented a partner-only Web Search Service API that returns Google Search results programmatically, and its older Custom Search JSON API is now closed to new customers and set to shut down for everyone on January 1, 2027. For enterprise brands, that narrows how anyone can pull Google results at scale, the raw material behind much brand-visibility monitoring. The new API sits behind a Google partner agreement, and Google has not said who qualifies.

What happened

Google updated its Web Search Service API documentation on September 9, 2026, across the overview and several related pages. According to that documentation, the API lets programmatic partners retrieve and display Google Search results through REST or gRPC requests, with results returned as JSON. Requests support query parameters including page size, SafeSearch, and date filters, alongside language and country options, and each request must set the end user’s IP address, which Google’s guide describes as being used “for regional routing and abuse prevention.”

Access is gated. Before querying, a partner needs an active Google Cloud project, an API key, and a client ID tied to a partner agreement. The documentation does not explain how a company becomes a partner, what the service costs, or what query limits apply.

Separately, the general-purpose Custom Search JSON API that many teams have used for years is winding down. Google’s documentation says it is closed to new customers, points existing customers to Vertex AI Search for searching up to 50 domains, and tells anyone who needs full web search to contact Google. Google has not named the Web Search Service API as the official migration path for those customers.

Why it matters

Existing Custom Search JSON API customers have until January 1, 2027 to transition to an alternative solution.

Programmatic access to Google results is the plumbing under a lot of visibility work: rank tracking, share-of-voice monitoring, and the dashboards that tell a brand where it surfaces across markets. Google is narrowing the front door. The broad, self-serve API is retiring, and the replacement for full web search is partner-gated with eligibility Google has not spelled out. Teams that assumed they could keep pulling Google results the way they always have now have a deadline and an open question about who gets in.

What this means for multi-location brands

A central marketing team rarely calls these APIs directly. Its SEO platforms, agencies, and in-house reporting tools do, which is exactly why this is a governance item rather than a developer footnote. The task before January 2027 is an audit: list every tool and vendor that pulls Google results programmatically on your behalf, and confirm each one has a migration plan. A visibility report built on an interface that is closing is a report that will go dark.

The steadier ground is first-party measurement of how your locations actually appear. Track presence across the estate with location-level performance insights rather than scraped rankings that a policy change can switch off overnight.

Being named in AI answers matters more than a raw ranking now, so put effort into being cited directly through Places AI, where the goal is the answer engine surfacing your locations. Then treat the wider job of working to improve local search visibility as something measured with data you own, not with an interface Google can gate or retire.

The bottom line

Google is tidying its search APIs into a partner-only lane, and the clock on the old one runs out on January 1, 2027. For enterprise brands the move is a prompt to check what their visibility reporting quietly depends on, before the dependency disappears.
