Google Search ad revenue hits record as AI answers grow

Google Search is not shrinking. Alphabet’s Q2 2026 results, reported on 22 July, show Google Search and other advertising revenue rose about 17% year over year to a record $63.3 billion, even as Google leaned further into its AI Overviews and AI Mode features. For multi-location brands deciding where to put their local presence budget, the signal is clear: Google Search is still where discovery and ad spend concentrate.

What happened

Alphabet reported Google Search and other advertising revenue of $63.3 billion for the quarter, up from $54.2 billion a year earlier, a rise of roughly 17%. Total Alphabet revenue reached $119.8 billion, up 24% year over year, with Google Cloud up 82% to $24.8 billion and YouTube advertising at $11.1 billion. Chief executive Sundar Pichai tied the quarter to the company’s AI spending rather than to Search specifically.

The results land against a year of warnings that AI-generated answers would erode Google Search traffic and, in time, its advertising base. So far the revenue does not show that erosion: Search advertising grew at double digits while Google leaned further into AI Overviews and its conversational AI Mode.

Why it matters

The gap between the “AI is killing Search” narrative and Google’s actual Search revenue is the story for anyone managing local presence at scale. If discovery were draining away from Google, it would show up first in advertiser demand, and it has not. What is changing is the shape of the results page: AI Overviews increasingly summarise an answer above the classic links, which raises the stakes on whether a brand’s location data is accurate enough to be represented correctly.

What this means for multi-location brands

For a national retailer, dealer group, or pharmacy network, the read is not to chase every new AI-search tactic while quietly divesting from the fundamentals. The surface where budget still converts is Google Search and Maps, so accurate, consistent local business listings across every location remain the base layer, and local ad campaigns still reach customers at the moment of intent. The addition, not the replacement, is feeding clean data into the AI answers now sitting above the classic results, which is where work to improve local search visibility and rank in AI search results meet. The brands that win keep the data governance tight so both the blue links and the AI answers point to the right store.

Our AI investments are redefining what’s possible across every part of our business. Q2 was an amazing quarter, with Alphabet revenues growing 24% year-over-year and Google Cloud revenues accelerating to 82% growth, driven by demand for AI infrastructure and AI solutions.

The bottom line

A record Search quarter alongside a full-scale AI rollout tells multi-location brands that Google is not ceding discovery, it is reformatting it. The brands that keep their location data accurate and centrally governed are the ones that stay visible whether the customer clicks a link or reads an AI answer.
