Google AI Mode reuses the same paragraphs across query after query, and a study from the content platform Pillarbase puts numbers on which ones. Published in June 2026, the analysis covers 15.7 million AI Mode citations spanning 2.7 million pages and 148 industries. Its finding for anyone trying to appear in AI answers is blunt: the passages Google quotes are full paragraphs with a median of 117 words, they lead with the answer, and they show up disproportionately on pages that already rank first.

What happened

Pillarbase examined 15,699,298 AI Mode citations gathered over roughly a year, covering 4.6 million distinct highlighted passages across 2.7 million pages and 148 industries. Nearly half of those citations, 47.7%, were not plain links but scroll-to-text highlights, the #:~:text= fragments Google uses to point at an exact sentence on a page and can reuse across many queries.

The passages Google favoured share a shape. The median quoted passage ran 117 words, a full paragraph rather than a one-line snippet. About 80% led with the answer in the opening sentence, and 83% were self-contained, meaning they made sense without the text around them. Format mattered too: passages phrased as a question were recycled far more often, appearing in a question-led format among 46% of frequently-reused passages against 22% of single-use ones. A small core of about 2,300 passages was reused 61 or more times, and the single most-recycled passage was quoted 661 times.

Ranking sat alongside all of it. Pages with 21 or more highlighted passages ranked first in Google Search 67% of the time, against just 2% for pages with only one to four highlights, and the most-recycled passages came disproportionately from top-ranked pages. Pillarbase is careful to call this a cross-sectional association: variant accumulation and recycling travel with ranking dominance, it says, rather than one causing the other.

Why it matters

The study reframes AI visibility as a writing and structure problem, not a mystery. Google is not paraphrasing pages into new answers as often as it is lifting a specific paragraph and pointing readers to it. That means the unit that wins is the passage: a self-contained chunk that answers one question completely, in the first sentence, in about a paragraph. Content built as long, meandering prose gives Google nothing clean to highlight, while content organised as direct answers gives it a passage it can quote and quote again.

It also suggests AI Mode has not replaced the ranking system, it sits alongside it. The passages quoted most tend to come from pages ranking first, so the work that earns a top position, relevance, authority, and accurate underlying data, looks like the same work that earns repeated AI citations. The study stops short of claiming ranking causes the citations, but the practical read is the same: there is no separate AI channel to optimise in isolation.

What this means for multi-location brands

For a central marketing team responsible for hundreds or thousands of location pages, the takeaway is that AI visibility scales through structure and data, not through one-off copywriting. Every location and service page should answer its obvious questions in self-contained, answer-first paragraphs of roughly a paragraph each: what a location offers, its hours, its services, how to reach it. Written that way across an estate, those pages give Google clean passages to quote for the local and near-me questions that AI Mode increasingly resolves inside the answer.

Underneath the writing is the same requirement that decides ordinary ranking: accurate, consistent location data at scale. A brand cannot be quoted for a location whose hours, address, or category are wrong across the map and search surfaces, and it cannot fix that profile by profile across thousands of sites. Managing one source of truth centrally is what keeps every location eligible in the first place. PinMeTo’s local business listing management pushes that single source of truth to Google, Apple, and the other search and map surfaces at once, and Places AI focuses on how that presence surfaces inside AI-generated answers, so a central team can treat AI citation as a managed outcome rather than a lottery.

The structural half is a generative engine optimization discipline: shaping content so AI systems can extract and reuse it. Paired with accurate data, it is what lets a brand rank in AI search results consistently rather than hoping a paragraph happens to get picked.

The passages Google AI Mode reused most often ran about 117 words, led with the answer, and were strongly associated with pages ranking first in Search.

The bottom line

The study turns “how do we show up in AI” into something a brand can act on: write answer-first, self-contained paragraphs, keep location data accurate everywhere, and earn the top organic position that AI Mode quotes from. The brands that win the AI citation are, for now, the brands already doing the fundamentals well at scale, and doing them page by page across every market they operate in.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of content does Google AI Mode quote most often?
According to a Pillarbase study of 15.7 million AI Mode citations published in June 2026, the passages Google reuses are full paragraphs rather than short snippets, with a median length of 117 words. Around 80% lead with the answer in the first sentence and 83% make sense on their own without the surrounding text. Passages phrased as a question were reused far more often, appearing in a question-led format among 46% of frequently-reused passages against 22% of single-use ones. Nearly half of all citations, 47.7%, were scroll-to-text highlights that Google can point to and reuse across many different queries.
Does ranking still matter for being quoted in AI Mode?
The two travel together. The same study found that ranking first in Google Search and being quoted repeatedly in AI Mode go hand in hand: pages with 21 or more highlighted passages ranked first 67% of the time, against just 2% for pages with only one to four. Pillarbase frames this as an association rather than proof that one causes the other. Either way, for a multi-location brand the fundamentals still apply: accurate, consistent location data and pages that earn the top organic position are what put a brand in a position to be quoted. AI visibility is downstream of the same location-data and content-quality work, managed centrally across every market.
