Programmatic SEO can cost a whole site Google's trust
- Local SEO
Low-value programmatic SEO can pull down an entire site, and the damage reaches well past the pages that caused it. Google Search Advocate John Mueller made the point on Bluesky on 7 September 2026, warning that when mass-generated pages read as low quality, Google’s systems can lose faith in the whole domain. For multi-location brands, whose location pages are programmatic by design, the line between useful and low-value is the line that protects site-wide visibility.
What happened
Responding to someone describing a site built by iterating through combinations of domain names, technologies and attributes, Mueller said the approach “often leads to a site that’s either spam, borderline spam, or low quality.” He warned that the cost is not contained to the offending pages: “Our systems have possibly lost faith in your site providing good value to users based on the old pages.”
His framing was blunt about the asymmetry. “It’s easy to spin something up with many pages, it’s hard to provide real value to users,” he wrote. The implication for anyone tempted to delete the pages and move on is that the domain-level judgement can outlast the pages that prompted it.
Our systems have possibly lost faith in your site providing good value to users based on the old pages.

Why it matters
The comment describes a site-level signal, not a page-level one. A brand can delete thin pages and still carry the consequence, because the judgement Google formed is about the domain’s tendency to publish low-value content at scale. That is a different and more durable problem than one page ranking poorly, and it lands hardest on sites that generate many near-identical pages from a single template.
What this means for multi-location brands
A multi-location brand’s location pages are programmatic SEO. A chain generates one page per branch from a shared template and a data feed, a close match to the pattern Mueller described. The difference between a page that helps a customer and a page that reads as filler is not the templating itself. It is whether each page carries genuinely local value: accurate opening hours and contact details, real photos, the services and stock that vary by site, local reviews, and information a person in that town would actually use.
Treat every location page as something a customer relies on, not a slot to fill. Feed accurate, differentiated data into your location pages and store locator so each one earns its place, and use local search marketing to keep the estate consistent and current rather than merely large. Pages that exist only because a location exists, with nothing locally useful on them, are the pages Mueller is warning about. Auditing and improving them is how a multi-location brand protects the local search visibility of the whole domain rather than a single page.
The bottom line
Scale is not the problem, thinness is. Multi-location brands win when every location page answers a real local search, and they put the whole domain at risk when they publish pages that exist only to exist.
