Meta has changed how people search on Facebook. In mid-June 2026 the company rolled out an AI Mode inside Facebook Search that answers questions with a synthesized response drawn from public content across its apps, rather than returning a list of links. For brands, it is another discovery surface where an AI system, not a ranked list, decides what a searcher sees.
What happened
AI Mode lives inside the existing Facebook search bar, alongside the options people already use such as People and Marketplace, and users can toggle between traditional search and the AI answer. A query returns a conversational answer assembled from public Facebook posts, Group discussions, and Reels, and the searcher can ask follow-up questions without starting over. Meta has said the feature is powered by its Meta AI assistant and a model it calls Muse Spark.

Meta Newsroom, June 2026
Meta has not disclosed whether brands can see when their content appears in an AI Mode answer, or how they might influence inclusion. That gap mirrors the wider transparency questions around AI Overviews and AI Mode in Google Search, where publishers and businesses have limited visibility into how their content is used.
Why it matters
Search on Facebook is shifting from retrieval to synthesis. Instead of surfacing your Page or post for a searcher to click, the system reads across public content and writes an answer. That rewards brands with a genuine, active public presence and penalises thin or neglected Pages, because a location with nothing public to draw on simply will not feature in the answer.
It also extends a pattern that now spans the platforms multi-location brands rely on. Google answers with AI Overviews and AI Mode. Apple and third-party assistants pull structured business data. Meta is now doing its own version inside the app where many brands still hold their largest social audience. The common thread is that accurate, active, public presence is the raw material these systems read.
What this means for multi-location brands
At enterprise scale the risk is inconsistency. A brand with hundreds of Facebook location Pages cannot afford some to be current and engaged while others sit dormant, because AI Mode will only ever draw on what is public and recent. The fix is the same governance discipline that already applies to listings, extended to social.
Manage social presence centrally rather than store by store. Keep every location’s Page accurate and consistently active through local social media management, so there is real, current public content for an answer engine to surface. Keep the underlying local business listing data correct everywhere, because the same name, location, and category signals feed discovery across platforms. And treat this as part of a wider answer-engine strategy: the work to rank in AI search results and to approach generative engine optimization now has a Meta dimension, not only a Google one.
The bottom line
AI Mode makes Facebook one more place where an AI system, not the brand, decides how a location shows up. Brands cannot optimise a black box directly, but they can control the input: accurate, active, public presence at every location. The ones that manage that consistently across the estate will be the ones the answer engines have something to say about.
