Retailers feeding product data to Google have a hard deadline. Google will sunset the Content API for Shopping on 18 August 2026, and any integration still sending product data through it will need to move to the newer Merchant API. Google has now made an extended-access form available for teams that need more time, so the migration is the retail engineering task of the summer.

What happened

Google confirmed that “Content API for Shopping will be sunset on August 18, 2026.” After that date, product data can no longer be sent to Merchant Center through the old Content API, and integrations must use the Merchant API (v1), which Google positions as its long-term standard with better performance, scalability and reporting. For teams that cannot finish in time, Google has published an extended-access form; industry reports say applicants can request an extension deadline of 15 October or 31 December 2026. A separate earlier step, moving from Merchant API v1beta to v1, was already due by 28 February 2026.

Why it matters

The Content API is how a huge number of retailers push their product catalog into Google, feeding both Shopping ads and free product listings. A sunset is not a cosmetic change: if the integration is not migrated, product data stops flowing and listings go stale. At enterprise scale, where feeds are wired into internal systems and run across many markets, that is a real project with a fixed clock, not a settings toggle.

What this means for retail

For a national retailer or a group managing feeds centrally, the job is to inventory every integration that still touches the Content API and schedule the move to the Merchant API before 18 August, using the extended-access form only as a deliberate buffer, not a default. The deeper point is ownership: product and location data flowing through APIs is core infrastructure, and a migration is the moment to confirm it is governed centrally rather than scattered across teams and agencies. Keep the underlying local business listings and product data consistent, treat integrations as managed assets through a single API suite, and align this with how the brand already runs data at scale via the Google Business Profile API. Retailers that migrate early keep their listings live through the cutover; those that wait risk a gap in visibility.

The bottom line

The Merchant API is where Google is putting its future, and the Content API’s clock runs out on 18 August 2026. For retail teams, the smart move is to migrate now, keep the data flowing, and use any extension as a planned safety margin rather than a rescue.
